FrancoAmericanGravy is an independent family historian and decent family genealogist but by no means a professional who came of age in the Upstate New York of the 1950s and 1960s. In the years immediately after WW2, our families found it easier to blend with American society than to recall life in Quebec with its high infant mortality, an unstable economy, lack of opportunity, and yes, even hunger. Our families had no sentimentality about being Franco Americans and preferred to forget the past. The post war years were a time of unification; we were all blended Americans. We believed in the value of ‘the melting pot’. We were Americans and where our families came from was of no consequence to us.
We didn’t learn the language. We were taught Parisian version.
We didn’t eat mimere’s foods. We preferred hamburgers, hot dogs and French fries
We didn’t observe St Jean Baptiste day because we had the fourth of July!
We didn’t ask the questions we could have; we didn’t seek the answers we should have.
